The Tesla Model 3 is a battery-electric mid-size sedan with a
fastback body style manufactured by Tesla, Inc. since 2017. The Model 3
was marketed as more affordable to more people than previous Tesla models. The
Model 3 was the world’s best-selling plug-in electric car for three straight
years, from 2018 to 2020. In June 2021, the Model 3 became the first electric
car to pass 1 million global sales. A refresh of the Tesla Model 3 was
introduced in 2023, featuring a revised exterior and interior.
Among the more affordable options in the electric vehicle market,
the 2021 Tesla Model 3 is, of course, the most name-recognized. It also earns a
spot on our Editors’ Favorites list. It takes a few styling cues from the
company’s Model S sedan and Model X SUV but goes its own way with a unique
interior design and all-glass roof. Acceleration is quick, and the Model 3’s
chassis is also playful—especially the Performance model, which gets a sportier
suspension and a track driving mode. But EV buyers are more interested in
driving range than speed or handling, and the Model 3 delivers there, too.
According to the EPA, the base model offers up to 263 miles of driving range,
and the more expensive Long Range model can go up to 353 per charge.
In 2021, the Model 3 became the best-selling electric vehicle in
the Netherlands with over 78,996 cars at the end of June 2021. The Model 3
became the first electric car to sell more than 1 million units globally in
June 2021.
It was also the best-selling electric vehicle in the UK for 2021,
with 34,783 registrations, beating the second most popular electric car, the
Kia e-Niro, by more than 22,500 registrations. The figures also make the Model
3 the second best-seller in the UK new car market in 2021, beaten only by the Vauxhall
Corsa, an affordable B-segment vehicle. The 9,612 Model 3s sold in December
were more than double the sales of any other car that month.
