2022 Ford F150 Overview

With a wide range of trims and body styles, the 2022 Ford F-150
is a workhorse that can be tailored for any task. Contractors and fleet
managers will appreciate the low cost and utility nature of the base XL,
while oil barons and wealthy ranchers will feel right at home in the King Ranch
or Limited versions. A variety of powertrains are also offered, including
hybrid and diesel, and the off-road-ready Tremor model promises to take you
almost anywhere you need to go. The F-150 has the guts to do the job.

2022 Ford F-150 Review & specifications

It’s not as good to live with on a day-to-day basis as its main rival, the Ram
1500, but a large number of buyers have historically been swayed by
Ford’s reputation and wide range of available features. We’re sure very few of
those people regret their purchase, so we’re happy to add the F-150 to our
Editor’s Choice list.

What’s new for 2022?

A new black appearance package is now available on the F-150
for 2022 and can be had on XL, XLT, Lariat, and Platinum models.
The Bed Utility Package is now available as an option on XL, XLT,
Lariat, and Tremor trims and is standard on the top-level King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited. This includes a tailgate step and locking cleat-style tie-downs.
Atlas Blue has joined the color palette this year as well. The all-electric
F-150 Lightning will also launch for the 2022 model year, but we review that
model separately.

The F-150 is available with a variety of body styles and bed
lengths. While the XLT model is a step up from the base XL work truck, we
prefer the added luxuries on the Lariat. It costs about $10,000 more than the
XLT, which may put it out of reach for some buyers, but it has the perfect
combination of features and affordability.

Engine, transmission,
and performance

The 2022 F-150 is available with several engines—a 290-hp 3.3-liter
V-6; a 400-HP 5.0-liter V-8; a 325-HP twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V-6; a 400-HP
twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6; and a 250-hp 3.0-liter diesel V-6. No matter
which engine you choose, the F-150 comes paired with a 10-speed automatic. For
the first time, the F-150 is also offered with a hybrid powertrain. Ford claims
the new 400-hp hybrid powertrain—comprising a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6,
35-kilowatt electric motor, and 10-speed automatic transmission—offers a
driving range of up to 700 miles per tank. Will do. and can also power on-board
generators to keep power flowing at work sites or during power outages.

 Buyers
can rear the F-150 with any of the available powertrains. On our test track,
the four-wheel-drive Laureate with a hybrid powertrain hit 60 mph in 5.4
seconds. During our test drive, we noted a compliant ride and acceptable
handling. High-spec models like King Wrench come with a variable-assist
steering system that sharpens response at low speeds for a more agile feel. The
trimmer model promises the most off-road capability. It offers 33-inch
all-terrain tires, an upgraded suspension, a locking rear differential, and a
four-wheel-drive transfer case borrowed from the mighty F-150 Raptor. On our
test track, the Quake jumped from 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds, just 0.1 seconds
behind the more powerful Raptor.

Towing and Payload
Capacity

While the towing capacity of the base 3.3-liter V-6 engine tops out
at 8,200 pounds, models equipped with the 400-hp twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 can
tow up to 14,000 pounds. Going with the venerable 5.0-liter V-8 means the
maximum towing capacity is just 13,000 pounds. The diesel V-6 has a towing
capacity of up to 12,100 pounds and the hybrid model has up to 12,700. Payload
capacities range from 1840 to 3250 pounds. These towing and payload
capabilities keep the new F-150 on par with key competitors like the Chevrolet
Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and Ram 1500.

Fuel Economy and
Real-World MPG

The EPA estimates the 2022 F-150 will earn up to 20 mpg city and 26
highway with the turbocharged 2.7-liter V-6. The twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 is
rated at up to 18 mpg city and 24 highway. The hybrid version is estimated to
be up to 25 mpg city and 26 highway. On our 75 mph highway fuel economy route,
which is part of our extensive testing regimen, the twin-turbo 3.5-liter Tremor
model returned 19 mpg. Once we get to drive the F-150 Hybrid, we can estimate
its real-world mpg. For more information on F-150 fuel economy, visit the EPA
website.

Interior, Comfort, and
Cargo

The F-150’s interior appointments nearly match the Ram 1500’s
deluxe cabin, especially in Ford’s top-of-the-line King Ranch, Platinum, and
Limited models. Premium materials are used everywhere and the cabin is packed
with plenty of storage cubbies. Additional convenience features are aimed at
making things easier for those who use the F-150 as a mobile workspace. For
example, the 10-speed automatic shift lever can be folded flat against the
center console to create a large flat workspace. Similarly, the F-150 can be
ordered with fold-flat front seats that can provide more sleeping space.

Passenger space is generous, and the four-door crew-cab body style is the most
spacious and family-friendly of the group. Outside, the F-150’s bed provides up
to 7.2-kW of power from an optional onboard generator to meet power needs at
job sites or tailgate parties.
