2019 Ford F-150 Review
The F-150 pickup truck has been Ford’s best-selling model
for decades. The elegant hauler can be tailored to suit every job and every
personality, with three cab and bed styles and a number of appearance packages.
Its innovative aluminum body construction helps save weight, which improves
performance and fuel economy, and there are a number of advanced engines and
high-tech driver assists. Looking for something more capable off-road? Check
out the 2019 Ford F-150 Raptor
(separately reviewed).
What is new in the
2019 Ford F-150?
The diesel engine is now an option on Laureate, King Ranch, and
Platinum models. The interior color scheme of the navy pair changes to a camelback
two-tone. FordPass Connect is now standard on the F-150 XLT, while the
CD player is deleted. The XLT Sport Appearance Package gets new five-inch
angled step bars, and new exterior colors include Agate Black, Abyss Grey, and
Silver Spruce.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
In our opinion, the mid-level Lariat SuperCrew with a large cargo
bed represents the best combination of versatility and value. A 325-hp
twin-turbo V-6 is standard engine. It costs an additional $1600 to upgrade to
the more powerful 375-hp version. That engine is responsive and snappy, and it
puts out 470 lb-ft of torque. Adding all-wheel drive isn’t necessary for
everyone, but it’s a must-have option for harsh winters. Every Laureate comes
with standard features such as a power-adjustable driver’s seat, touchscreen
with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, and heated and cooled front
seats.
Engine, transmission,
twang, and efficiency
Choices: A wide range of engine choices, including diesel, and optional
turbo V-6 is fast.
Dislikes: 10-speed automatic slows down to be reactive under hard
acceleration.
The 2019 Ford F-150 has a great selection of the latest engines, including a
3.0-liter diesel that’s good for 440 lb-ft of torque. Most engines pair with
Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission. The strongest engine isn’t a
red-blooded V-8, but a mighty twin-turbo V-6 capable of towing a class-leading
13,200 pounds. Without the trailer-towing package, the F-150 can tow up to
7,000 pounds with the V-8 or advanced V-6. The King Ranch model we tested with
the 375-hp V-6 fared best in all categories compared to the competition’s
biggest V-8 engines. The V-8 F-150 was slower to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds, but its
50 to 70 mph time was nearly identical to the V-6. The V-6 model’s 10-speed
automatic was slow to react under hard acceleration but otherwise worked
without a problem. The 2019 Ford F-150 doesn’t reach the comfort level the Ram
1500’s available air-spring suspension offers. The ride is built on smooth
surfaces but not on hard bumps, where the rear end can wobble.
Fuel Economy and
Real-World MPG
The 2019 Ford F-150 offers a pair of twin-turbo V-6 engines in the
pursuit of V-8 power with better fuel economy than the V-8. The 375-hp V-6
model achieved 19 mpg in our real-world highway fuel-economy test, which is 4
mpg less than its official EPA estimate.
Interior,
Infotainment, and Cargo
Likes: Reclining back seats, optional heated and cooled massaging
front seats, optional Wi-Fi connectivity.
Dislikes: Slow-to-respond infotainment system.
Yesterday’s luxury sedan is today’s full-size pickup, and the 2019 Ford
F-150 has the space and stuff to prove it. It impresses with options ranging
from massaging seats to a panoramic sunroof. The F-150’s optional touchscreen
infotainment system has beautiful graphics, a picture to learn, and is loaded
with useful features. What holds it back is its slow reaction to user inputs. The 2019 Ford F-150 has plenty of storage
space – it’s a pickup after all.
