2024 Toyota
Thundra Review
Redesigned for 2022, the full-size 2024 Toyota Tundra
pickup continues on the same course it did when it debuted in 2000: a ton
of pickup set in stone in a slightly different and sometimes quirky style than
longtime segment leaders. The up formula. For example, the current 2024
Toyota Tundra pickup can’t be configured with a V-8 engine, a move that
would be tantamount to betraying a certain traditional truck buyer demographic.
It is replaced by a twin-turbocharged V-6 in two configurations and a third V-6
hybrid variant (reviewed separately). It is also notable that it lacks a
full-time four-wheel drive option. It is closer to the traditional truck
blueprint in other metrics, however, offering extended- or crew-cab body styles
and a 5.5-, 6.5-, or 8.1-foot bed.
Cab and bed combinations span seven trims,
from the base SR to the top-level Capstone. The Tundra also includes a
coil-spring rear suspension, a feature currently shared only with the Ram 1500,
which generally provides a smoother ride but can kill payload capacity. It has
a maximum towing capacity of 12,000 pounds—more than enough for most casual
users—though it lags behind the tow rating of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500,
Ford F-150, or Ram 1500.
What is new in Toyota
Thundra 2024?
The 2024 Toyota Tundra pickup has seen some cosmetic and package
updates for 2024. The TRD Off-Road Package is now available in the Platinum
grade and includes a black grille with color-coded surround, black mirror caps,
window surrounds, over fenders and badging, and body color. and black door handles.
A Night Shade Package is now available in the Limited grade, and a full-size,
12.3-inch digital instrument panel is now standard on the Limited. Head-up
display, which was previously only available bundled with load-leveling air
suspension on Platinum and 1794 grades, is now a freestanding option. A factory
three-inch lift kit is now available on all models except for the TRD Pro,
which comes with its own suspension setup.
Although the entry-level 2024 SR Tundra comes
with a 348-hp twin-turbo V-6 and is available as an Extended or Crew Cab
(Double Cab and Crew Max, respectively, in ‘Utah vernacular), it comes with
manually adjustable seats. is limited to. , rolls on steel wheels, requires a
surcharge for a basic trailer Class IV hitch, and doesn’t allow for advanced
driver aids beyond the standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 driver assist system.
All these errors go to the rights of SR5 as standard or available content with
the above items. Horsepower on this model goes up to 389, and torque increases
to 479 pound-feet. Adding the TRD off-road package drops the suspension with
Bilstein dampers, and many additional touches designed to take the brunt of
occasional off-road use.
Engines, Transmissions, and Performance
The 2024 Toyota Tundra pickup offers three power levels, all
based on a turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6. In the base SR model, the engine is
tuned to 348 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque. Otherwise, it makes 389
horses and 479 lb-ft. (A third is a 473-horsepower hybrid, which we review
separately.) All use a 10-speed automatic transmission. Equipped with the
389-hp, twin-turbo V6, our Limited test truck delivered a 6.1-second zero-to-60
mph time. Like the Ram 1500, the Tundra uses a coil-spring rear suspension that
provides a smooth ride in day-to-day operation. The TRD Offroad model features
all-terrain tires mounted on a special set of black 18-inch wheels, a raised
suspension with Bilstein dampers, a rear locker, skid plates, mudguards,
aluminum pedals, a leather-wrapped shift knob, and, are included. somewhat
curiously, a heated leather steering wheel; Those looking for more off-road
capabilities will want the TRD Pro (note: TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro are two
separate packages) with 1.1-inch front lift, 2.5-inch FOX internal bypass
coilovers and rear remote. Reservoir. Shocks and TRD PRO Front Stabilizer Bar.
The TRD Sport package goes in the other direction, offering a half-inch lower
suspension and 20-inch wheels for those looking for a classy look and sharper
road behavior.
Towing and Payload Capacity
With a 12,000-pound maximum tow rating, the 2024
Toyota Tundra pickup can’t be considered lightweight in the towing and
payload arena, yet it’s among the least capable in the half-ton class. The Ford
F-150 leads with a 14,000-pound rating, followed by the Chevrolet Silverado at
13,300 and the Ram 1500 at 12,750. The maximum payload is 1940 pounds, which
leaves more than 1300 pounds on the table compared to Ford’s 3250-pound payload
rating.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
In standard, non-hybrid guise, the two-wheel-drive 2024
Tundra is EPA-rated for 20 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. Four-wheel drive lowers
those figures by 1 mpg. However, the Tundra delivered only 19 mpg on our 75-mph
highway route, part of our extensive testing regimen. Furthermore, the same
truck averaged only 14 mpg overall while in our hands.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Although the current Tundra is much better than the
last generation in terms of material quality and design, it fails to bring
anything new or revolutionary to the truck segment. There’s a thick dashboard
with prominent air vents and a thick, smooth center section that connects to
the door panels. Moving up the trim hierarchy brings the usual materials and
feature upgrades, culminating in the top-of-the-line Capstone’s semi-aniline
leather upholstery, American walnut interior trim, acoustically laminated side
windows, and a heads-up display. Is. Analog gauges and a small driver
information display are standard, but top trim levels feature a 12.3-inch
digital instrument panel gauge cluster.
The center console is huge, and there
are plenty of cubbies to store the vagaries of modern life. The extended cab
(aka Double Cab) is available with either a 6.5- or 8.1-foot bed, while the
Crew Cab (aka Crew Max) is offered with either a 5.5- or 6.5-foot bed. Opting
for a smaller cab won’t affect front-row comfort, but does reduce rear-seat
legroom from 41.6 inches in the Crew Cab to just 33.3 in the Extended Cab.
Infotainment & Connectivity
The SR and SR5 grade Tundras get a standard 8.0-inch
infotainment touchscreen, but a 14-inch screen is available on the SR and
standard on the rest of the lineup. Featuring clear graphics, it dominates the
center of the dash and has a useful volume knob but lacks a tuning knob, and
the steering wheel controls have limited functionality. Audio systems include a
base six (Extended Cab) or nine-speaker (Crew Cab) setup, but a 12-speaker JBL
Premium Audio System is standard on the Limited and above. Wireless charging is
standard on the Platinum and up. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are
standard and a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot is offered.
