2022 Lucid Air Review

With an EPA-estimated
all-electric range of up to 520 miles and 1111 horsepower, the 2022 Lucid Air
aspires to be more than just a Tesla rip-off. The first model from startup
Lucid Motors has an aerodynamic shape that is functional and fashionable. Its spacious
and upscale cabin is clad in a glass roof that helps it live up to its
eco-name.

The Air blends practicality with technology, sporting roomy storage
options, and no shortage of driver assistance. Sure, the Lucid Air looks more
like an 80s cover band than a luxury sedan, but the Tesla Model S looked like
an obscure 19th-century electrical invention when it debuted, so only time will
tell. How far the year 2022 goes.

What is new for 2022?

While Tesla has established
itself as a prominent EV automaker,  2022
Lucid Air Motors is best known for currently supplying batteries to Formula E
race cars. Now, the upstart company looks set to challenge luxury alternatives
such as https://carsculturehub.blogspot.com/2023/08/2023-tesla-model-s.html and the Porsche Tycoon with its all-new 2022 Air
sedan.

Pricing and
which one to buy.

Trim Level Price
Pure $94,550
Touring $117,550
Grand Touring $155,650
Dream Edition Performance $170,650
Dream Edition $170,650
Grand Touring Performance $180,650

We’ll move on to the Turing 2022
Lucid Air. It offers a lot to like and is priced considerably less than the
Grand Touring trim. The Touring offers 20-inch wheels, real leather upholstery,
in-dash navigation, and a driving range estimated at 406 miles per charge. All
Lucid models come standard with three years of free charging via the Electrify
America charging network. The best Dream Edition models are officially sold
out, but if you want to maximize your luxury — and your out-of-pocket costs —
the Grand Touring trim offers the bulk of the dream. Lucid increased Air prices
during the 2022 model year, so orders placed after June 1, 2022, will use the
prices detailed above.

EV motor, power, and
performance

The entry-level 2022 Lucid Air Pure
and Touring models have dual electric motors that provide all-wheel drive and
produce 620 horses. Grand Touring makes 1050. The initial run of limited
edition cars called the Dream Edition and Dream Edition Performance were good
for 933 horsepower and 1111 horsepower respectively. Now that we’ve driven a
Dream Edition, we can report that it’s quick and surprisingly agile for its
size. At our test track, it bolted from 60 mph in just 2.6 seconds.

Despite
riding on conventional steel coil springs rather than air springs, the sedan
felt quiet and smooth in the aptly named Smooth Drive mode. Our main complaint
was our example’s 21-inch wheels on low-profile performance tires, which
produced noticeable road noise over a section of rough pavement. We’ve also
sampled the Grand Touring and Grand Touring Performance trims and the former
returned a quick 3.0-second zero-to-60 mph time, easily repeated using the
Performance’s Launch Mode.

Fuel Economy and Real-World
MPGe

The most efficient 2022 Lucid
Air is rated at 131 MPGe combined and Performance versions are rated at 111
MPGe combined. During our test drive, however, we recorded just 82 MPGe. For
more information on air efficiency, visit EPA’s website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Make no mistake, the 2022 Lucid
Air is meant to be a luxury car, and its elegant interior is packed with
rich-looking materials and cutting-edge technology. Lucid is particularly proud
of the sedan’s spacious passenger space, which is highlighted by a large back
seat. While the standard rear seat is said to be comfortable for up to three
adults, there is also an optional Executive Rear Seating option that adds a
recline function for ultimate comfort.

The Air’s glass roof makes it feel even
more airy and helps with visibility. The sedan’s front center console appears
to offer generous storage space behind the retractable lower touchscreen and
within the large center console bin, which has cup holders as well as slots for
keeping smartphones. We’re also told that its front trunk — or trunk — will
have 10 cubic feet of volume.

Range, charging, and battery
life

The 2022 Lucid Air sets the bar
with an extraordinary range, establishing itself as a stand-out electric
vehicle. The Dream Edition Range model boasts an astounding 520 miles of range
on a single charge, which is a remarkable performance. The Dream Edition
Performance model is no slouch either, cruising a comfortable 471 miles before
needing a recharge.

For those opting for the base
Pure and mid-range Touring trims, you’ll still enjoy 406 miles of driving on a
full charge. The Grand Touring and Grand Touring Performance models raise the
bar even further, offering ranges of up to 516 and 446 miles, respectively. In
fact, during our testing, the Grand Touring model achieved a remarkable 410
miles of range at 75 miles per hour on the highway, setting a new standard for
EVs.

Powering the 2022 Lucid Air Air
is a robust 112.0-kWh battery pack, which ensures ample energy storage for
those extended journeys. Additionally, the Lucid Air is equipped with DC
fast-charging capability, meaning it can quickly replenish its energy reserves.
When connected to a fast charger, this sleek sedan can add up to an impressive
300 miles of range in just 21 minutes.

One of the distinguishing
features of Lucid Air is that there are no strict restrictions on how often
owners can recharge their vehicles, as long as they are used for personal,
non-commercial purposes. This flexibility makes it easy for owners to keep
their Lucid Air ready for any adventure without having to worry about frequent
charging limitations.
