Development:

Development
of the eleventh-generation Civic was led by senior project leader Tomoyuki
Yamagami. The model’s design approach is what Honda calls “Man-Maximum,
Machine-Minimum”.

Honda moved
the bottom of the windshield pillars 1.96 inches (50 mm) rearward, which
stylistically lengthens the hood. This model also adopts the lower beltline and
door-mounted side mirrors previously adopted by the eighth and ninth-generation
Civic to improve visibility.

The body
structure has improved torsional stiffness by 8 percent and bending stiffness
by 13 percent compared to the previous generation, supporting improved ride,
handling, and NVH. The suspension setup was designed to make the most of the
stiffer body structure and the extra 1.4 inches (36 mm) of wheelbase to improve
ride quality.

For this
generation, the Civic hatchback featured a fastback, “coupe-inspired”
profile similar to liftbacks. Compared to the sedan model, Honda shortened the
rear overhang by 4.9 inches (124 mm), while keeping the wheelbase length and rear
doors the same. As well as in Japan, the Civic hatchback is manufactured in the
US at the Greensburg, Indiana plant.
