An EV That Drives Like a Porsche: That’s Exactly What the Four-Door
Tycoon Is. Aside from its locked-down handling and communicative steering, it
has Olympic power where acceleration is concerned, capable of hitting 60 mph in
just 2.4 seconds. Every Taycan is a four-door sedan, but for added cargo space,
Porsche offers a wagonized version, called the Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo,
which we review separately. The Taycan hides the usual EV quirkiness with a
sleek design inside and out, with massive wheels and brakes helping to impress
the mod.

The EPA estimates that the longest-driving Taycan is good for 246
miles of range, which doesn’t even compromise the least efficient Lucid Air’s
estimated 384 miles between charges. The most powerful Taycan Turbo S packs 750
horsepower, and all models are capable of high-speed DC-fast charging for up to
270 kWh of power. The 2024 Porsche Taycan is an electric sports car worthy of the Porsche
crest worn by so many legendary 911s before it — but unlike them, it whispers
rather than roars.

While the 2024 Porsche Taycan Turbo and Turbo S models certainly offer supercar-level performance, our
recommendation leans toward the more budget-friendly all-wheel-drive Taycan 4S.
The 4S variant comes equipped with a 522 horsepower powertrain, 19-inch wheels,
adaptive air suspension, partial leather interior, and keyless entry.

 

In our
cost-conscious manner, we’ll refrain from delving into Porsche’s extensive
personalization options. Instead, we’d opt for the Performance Battery Plus,
which not only increases the size of the battery pack but also increases the
combined horsepower to an impressive 562. Another must-have enhancement is the
Performance Package, which significantly enhances the Taycan’s driving
experience. The package includes rear-axle steering and torque vectoring for
improved agility, Sport Plus drive mode for sharper performance, and active
anti-roll bars to increase stability during cornering.

motor, power, and performance

Most 2024 Porsche Taycan models
have dual electric motors, one powering the front wheels and the other the
rear. They produce distinct outputs that differ depending on the trim level.
The 4S produces 522 horsepower with the small battery and 562 horsepower with
the large battery. A bigger juicer comes standard on the top models, the 670-hp
Turbo and 750-hp Turbo S. The base model makes between 402 and 469 horsepower,
depending on battery size, but is rear-wheel drive only. The sweet spot is the
590-hp Taycan GTS with 626 lb-ft of torque. All Taycan models also feature an
innovative two-speed direct drive transmission that contributes significantly
to the Taycan’s acceleration. We drove the Taycan 4S and were impressed by its
quick performance (hitting 60 mph in 3.4 seconds) as well as its
point-and-shoot handling. However, we do wish it had a more responsive brake
pedal, especially since Porsche opted to forego one-pedal driving. Those in
dire need of speed will be blown away by the Turbo SK rocket ship’s takeoff.
The version we tested hit 60 mph in just 2.4 ticks and cleared the quarter mile
at 130 mph in 10.5 seconds. (A Tesla Model S Performance with Cheetah mode
matched that blast to 60 mph; a Model S Plaid destroyed the Porsche in
acceleration, however.) With the right steering, that’s the thing. This is
especially the case with electric vehicles. And it’s also comfortable. Even
rolling around on 21-inch wheels with low-profile tires, another Taycan Turbo S
we’ve driven never felt stiff or harsh.

 

Fuel
Economy and Real-World MPGe

The most efficient 2024 Porsche Taycan is rated at 83 MPGe. By comparison, the Tesla Model S Long Range has a
rating of 120 MPGe. When driven on the highway, the Porsche is rated at up to
88 MPGe and the Tesla at 115 MPGe. We tested the Taycan 4S with the bigger
battery on our 75-mph highway route and observed 65 MPGe. We performed the same
test with the 2018 Model S 100D and observed 91 MPGe. We saw the 2020 Taycan 4S
get 180 miles of real-world range on our aforementioned highway test. For more

Range,
charging, and battery life

The Taycan’s driving
range is exceptional compared to the Tesla Model S, which can travel 400 miles
on a single charge. Porsche’s ratings are between 206 and 246 miles, depending
on battery size and electric motors. The Taycan exceeded its range estimates in
real-world competition tests. Each Taycan model has an 800-volt architecture
that allows for 270 kW of peak charging. Models with larger batteries — Porsche
labels the pack at 93.4 kWh, but only 83.7 kWh are usable — can be charged from
5 to 80 percent in a claimed 23 minutes. However, 800-volt DC fast chargers are
rare, and peak charging rates are not very informative, as we tested in
comparison tests. According to Porsche, charging on a 50-kW DC fast charger
takes 93 minutes. We tested real-world variables in charging during our
11-car, thousand-mile EV1000 rally.

Interior,
Comfort, and Cargo

Inside the
sleek-looking 2024 Porsche Taycan is a tech-packed environment. The design is apparently
simple and reminiscent of what we’ve seen in other Porsche models. As expected,
the interior can be decked out in rich materials and various color schemes.
There’s a lengthy list of luxury options, including four-zone climate control,
massaging front seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats.

The 2024 Porsche Taycan comes standard with 2+2 seats, but there’s an option to add a third in
the back if desired. We found the rear accommodation and storage space of the
electrified Porsche a little lacking, and we didn’t enjoy moving to the lower
front seat. From behind the wheel, though, the view outside is stunning.
